On painting in winter
Short days, low sun and the best light of the year. Why I do my most important work between November and March.

The low sun
People are surprised when I say winter is my favourite time to paint. But the sun is so low in Cornwall in January that everything is lit from the side, and the colours are clearer than in any summer.
The days are short, so I work fast. Most of the morning studies took less than an hour.
Staying warm
The loft has a wood burner, two jumpers and a flask. Oil paint gets stiff in the cold, so I keep the tubes in my pockets.
